I recently had a custom Tabs module developed for DotNetNuke after running into limitations with existing solutions.

Most off-the-shelf tabs modules worked for basic layouts but fell short when it came to:

  • modern styling control (especially dark themes),
  • responsive behavior,
  • clean markup,
  • and long-term maintainability on DNN 10.x.

Tabs are a core content structure on my site, not just a visual feature, so forcing an older module to fit wasn’t ideal.

Going custom allowed the module to be built natively for DNN, with:

  • clean, skin-friendly HTML,
  • responsive behavior by default,
  • backend-managed tabs,
  • permission awareness,
  • and no unnecessary JS dependencies.

The result feels like a native DNN component rather than a bolted-on widget, and it’s far easier to maintain and extend going forward.

For core site features like tabs, galleries, or navigation, custom development can absolutely be worth it when flexibility, performance, and long-term stability matter.
